of Bengal, 326 K.M, south of the State Capital, Chennai, 145 K.M from Trichy, A middle Town. The District Capital
Nagapattinam lies between Northern Latitude 10.7906 degrees and 79.8428 Degrees
Eastern Longitude. A District known for its Rich Religious Heritage and
Communal Harmony. Nagapattinam district was carved out by bifurcating the
Erstwhile composite Thanjavur district on 18.10.1991. Nagappatinam is a unique
District with all its historical and cultural significance. This Houses the places of Worship belongs to Major faiths. Nagappattinam is one of the constituents of chola
mandalam, acclaimed as the Most prominent among the ancient Tamil
Kingdoms. Its salient features more than anything else have
contributed to the glory of the cholamandalam.

District, contributes a higher share of Rice Production in the State. We
have raised so many important agricultural crop in our District. Rice,
Groundnut, Pulses, Gingelly, Sugarcane and Cotton.
FISHING, along with Para marine activities like Dry
fish ,Prawn farming constitues the second Major economy for the district.
The marine ecosystem provides mankind with food, medicines, industrial
products and pleasure.

An Any Time , Any Where model of service has been launched for five key
sectors including Land, Transport and
Local Administration. Many Citizen close services like documents on
land, Birth and Death can be had from the portal.

A Pilot District for the GIS implementation by the State Planning Commission as part of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI).
An open source Application by NIC provides Geo Information about the District
guinness record
On the day of Gandhi Jayanthi (2nd October,2002) A Mega Tree Plantation
programme was started and 2.5 lakh tree saplings were planted throughout the
district.
A Special program
was organized by the District Administration with the co-operation and support
of various voluntary organizations and public to make a Guinness World Record
Attempt to plant maximum number of tree saplings in 24 hours in a single patch
of land using 300 persons.

HOME STAY, A New Model of Rural Tourism, In a bid to promote rural tourism, especially
among low and middle income families, the Department of Tourism here has proposed ?home stay?
scheme ? a model
that was hitherto confined to elite tourism accompanied by high-end tourist packages.
FMS, Fish Marketing Societies and micro enterprise
development through SHGs will be promoted through a programme by
International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), banks and the
government to address the livelihood needs of coastal communities.
FISHERIES UNIVERSITY , District has a coastline of 188 km with 9,000
fishing vessels involved in fishing. The fishing harbour here is also being
modernised even as prawn-rearing is one of the important economic activities.
Therefore, this district is conducive for setting up the Fisheries University
Nearly 1,283 prawn farms are registered in Nagappattinam district and almost all of them depend on imported feed. The
opening of Bismi Feeds will reduce the costs of prawn farm owners while
also providing employment in the district, Collector M. Jayaraman said
here on Saturday.
